Susan Byram has earned the 2019 Sponsored Student Programs Appreciation Award.

Byram is the associate director of graduate and international admissions. She was selected for the behind-the-scenes work she does to facilitate the admission of sponsored students to the U of A. She was honored at an appreciation event last month.

The Sponsored Student Programs Award recognizes faculty and staff members who have:

  • Facilitated an aspect of the sponsored student process
  • Encouraged or mentored sponsored students
  • Exemplified outstanding contributions to the sponsored student program

In addition to honoring Byram, sponsored students on track to finish their studies in spring and summer 2019 were recognized.

Students who attended the event said they enjoyed studying at the U of A. They said their time on campus and in the region has given them unique experiences and allowed them to meet new friends. Additionally, they have learned more about the world and its cultures.

"I have had four years of life-changing experiences in Fayetteville," said Veronica Pereira, a sponsored student from Timor-Leste. "This place is a second home for me."

Sponsored students are those who are funded by foreign governments, the U.S. government, domestic and international agencies, private companies and corporations. These international students, upon completion of their degrees or study-abroad experience, return to their home countries and serve as important links between the United States, Arkansas and the University of Arkansas in business, government, education and industry.
