IT Services Tips for Secure Holiday Shopping

Cyber Monday is here and with it, so are those who don't have our best interests in mind. This year, a record number of U.S. consumers plan to shop online for gifts.

While the internet is a great resource for savvy shoppers, it can also be home to cyber thieves looking for their next target. Last year, almost 5 million people in the U.S. fell victim to online scams. To help you stay safe this holiday shopping season, here are a few tips from IT Services.

• Validate Website Security
  Purchase items from companies that you know. Many online businesses are fabricated. Cyber thieves attempt to steal personal information and can even appear legitimate to an experienced online shopper. Check to see if an online store or giving website begins with "https" rather than "http" to ensure your safety.
   
• Avoid Unsecured Public Wi-Fi
  Using unsecured public Wi-Fi places shoppers at a higher risk of identity theft. Consider where you are shopping and how much information you are sharing. As a reminder, the UARK Wi-Fi is secure, meaning you can safely shop when on campus.
   
• Credit vs. Debit
  When shopping online, use your credit card instead of a debit card as much as possible. In the event that your information is stolen, a credit card provides more protection from unwarranted charges. Check with your bank about additional security features. 
   
• Beware of Phishing Emails
  It is common to receive emails during this popular shopping season asking you to follow a link to "receive the deal of the week." Do not click on email links or open attachments, these are often phishing attempts.
