FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen will present a lecture at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, in Ken and Linda Sue Shollmier Hall, Room 250 of Vol Walker Hall, on the University of Arkansas campus, as part of the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design lecture series.

Pelkonen is an architect, writer and associate professor at the Yale School of Architecture, where she teaches design, history and theory subjects. Her scholarly work deals with the genesis and meaning of form in various geographic and historical contexts.

In her lecture, "Exhibitions That Transformed Architecture, 1948-2000," Pelkonen will discuss the way exhibitions influenced how modern architecture was made, discussed and ultimately experienced. The focus is on exhibitions that introduced new themes, concepts and representational techniques into architectural discourse. Contributions by many leading figures of post-World War II architecture - including Hans Hollein, COOP Himmelblau, Aldo Rossi, and Giancarlo di Carlo - will be covered, along with key curators who help radicalize exhibition as a medium.

Pelkonen has authored and edited several books, most notably Achtung Architektur! Image and Phantasm in Contemporary Austrian Architecture (MIT Press/Graham Foundation, 1996), Eero Saarinen: Shaping the Future (co-edited with Donald Albrecht; Yale University Press, 2006), Alvar Aalto: Architecture, Modernity and Geopolitics (Yale University Press, 2009), and Exhibit A: Exhibitions that Transformed Architecture (Phaidon Press, 2018).

This is the Martha Dellinger Memorial Lecture, sponsored by Sharon and the late Jim Parker, and the Histories of Architecture and Design Lecture.

The school is pursuing continuing education credits for this lecture through the American Institute of Architects and the American Society of Landscape Architects.

The public is invited to attend. Admission is free, with limited seating.
