Eight Mexican undergraduates took part in a research internship program at the University of Arkansas this summer.

The program provided students with academic, cultural and professional development. Students conducted research with faculty, learned tips for taking the GRE and took part in cultural activities.

Chaim Goodman-Strauss, professor of mathematical sciences, said it was rewarding to work with the visiting students. He mentored Diego Lopez Zanella, who will graduate this fall from the Universidad National Autonoma de Mexico. The program inspired Lopez Zanella to return to the United States for graduate school.

Students made global connections through the five-week program. Interacting with members of the campus and Fayetteville communities helped students grow their cultural skills.

"These were some of the most outgoing students I've seen," said Cameron Caja, assistant director of custom and short term programs. "They worked hard to get involved in the community and with their fellow students."

The Mexico-United States Commission for Educational and Cultural Exchange, which also administers the Fulbright Exchange program for Mexico, sponsored the program.

"This program is great example of how international partnerships enrich students' academic experiences and professional development, while deepening cultural understanding," said Gloria Flores Passmore, director of the Office of Sponsored Student Programs. "This program prepares students for future success."

International partnerships help bolster the university's global reputation. They also help form connections for economic development in Arkansas. According to NAFSA: Association of International Educators, international students in Arkansas contributed $160.4 million to the state's economy in the 2016-17 academic year.
