HOT SPRINGS, Ark. — In August, Garvan Woodland Gardens will host two popular art classes, an ecology day camp, a bonsai class and "The World Around Us" art exhibit.
The "Bonsai Essentials Series: Techniques and Summer Care" will continue from 10-11 a.m. Aug. 4 in the Weyerhaeuser Bonsai Learning Center. Bryan Carlan, Garvan horticulturist, will present a review of seasonal care, tips and techniques for budding bonsai gardeners.
The "Natural State Ecology Day Camp" will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 7-9. The conservation-themed camp for children ages 8-12 will feature hiking, interactive science lessons, art and design projects and more. Students will explore the ecology of Arkansas while learning about stewardship of natural resources. Participants should pack bug spray, sunscreen, lunch and a water bottle.
A two-day "Mosaic-Making Workshop" will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 21 and 22 in the Magnolia Room. Suzie Burch will lead participants in designing and creating a mosaic garden planter art piece. All materials will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring old trinkets, stones and other objects to include in their art.
"Art and Wine" will be held from 6-8:30 p.m. Aug. 31 in the Magnolia Room. Dee Garrett will lead this acrylic painting workshop for beginning artists, with seasonal blooms providing artistic inspiration. Participants will create an 8-by-10-inch finished piece on canvas. All materials will be provided. Complimentary wine and cheese will be served. Participants must be 21 or older.
Three Hot Springs Village artists will show their work in "The World Around Us" art exhibit Aug. 1-31 in the Magnolia Room. Shirley Anderson specializes in plein air painting. Barbara Seibel uses watercolor for her work. Caryl Joy Young paints in pastels and oils. All three artists have exhibited throughout Arkansas.
