APW Awards 2018 Scholarship to UA Hill Magazine Editor
Arkansas Press Women is proud to announce its 2018 scholarship recipient, Andrea Johnson from the University of Arkansas.
Johnson, a senior from Fort Smith, worked as the projects news editor for The Arkansas Traveler at the university in Fayetteville. Starting in the fall, Johnson will serve as editor-in-chief for Hill Magazine.
She is studying journalism in the School of Journalism and Strategic Media and Spanish in the Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures, both in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences.
APW will award Johnson a $1,000 scholarship at its upcoming summer luncheon on June 30 in Benton.
"Andrea was chosen because of her diverse experience; she's done everything from reporting on refugees to photographing sports events to writing about Tom Cotton's visit to Northwest Arkansas," said Ginny Monk, APW's scholarship chair. "Her interest in giving a voice to the voiceless is evident."
One of Johnson's pieces of work that she submitted in her application profiled students involved in helping refugees.
Johnson, who operates her own photography business, has won numerous awards for reporting and photography. She is an intern this summer at the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and hopes to one day report on Spanish-speaking communities. Johnson is the daughter of Ron and Dana Johnson.
