Latin Artist Gregorio Uribe to Perform at Faulkner Center

As a key event of International Education Week, the University of Arkansas is hosting internationally acclaimed artist Gregorio Uribe for a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, at the Jim and Joyce Faulkner Performing Arts Center.

Emerging as a graduate from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Uribe has made a name for himself in the Latin music scene of both New York City and Boston. Uribe is well-known for leading the Gregorio Uribe Big Band, a 16-piece orchestra that blends cumbia and other Colombian rhythms with powerful big band arranging.

He released Cumbia Universal (Zoho Music) featuring eight-time Grammy-winner and Latin music icon Rubén Blades in October 2015. Upon its release, the debut album for the big band hit the Billboard charts and received widespread critical acclaim with performances selling out at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Villa Victoria Center for the Arts in Boston and two concerts at the celebrated Teatro Colón in his native Bogotá, Colombia.

Uribe has been a guest artist with Carlos Vives, multiple Grammy Award winner, on several occasions. He was also named by the government of Colombia as one of the "100 Most Successful Colombians Abroad." He has been an artist-in-residence at Dartmouth College and a commissioned composer for Grammy-winning Arturo O'Farrill and The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra.

"We are so lucky to have such great support from many departments to bring in such an inspired act," said Jake Hertzog, U of A guitar instructor. "Gregorio is the next generation of cross-cultural artists who are taking music in exciting directions. He will also be performing with several U of A faculty and sharing his artistry all across our campus with additional workshops and House concerts."

This is a special performance for International Education Week. International Education Week is nationwide opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange and cultural diversity. The week is part of the University of Arkansas' efforts to promote programs that prepare students for a global environment and to attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences in the United States.
