Global Ethics Day at U of A Features Discussions of Ethics in World Issues, College Athletics

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas will host several events on Wednesday, Oct. 18, as a part of the Global Ethics Day, which is sponsored by the Carnegie Council. The U of A will be one of more than 50 institutions from 16 countries taking part in this observance.

The Global Ethics Day events will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Arkansas Union Connections Lounge and will emphasize the campus as a community that develops people to solve problems and lead communities, ethically.

Events include a food drive, a special lunch provided by Chartwell’s featuring sustainable items, two panel discussions and a special presentation on developing students into ethical professionals.

Students and faculty are also invited to enter the Carnegie Council’s International Essay Contest, on the topic: “In your opinion, what is the greatest ethical challenge facing the world today? What are the ethical issues involved and how can we work together to overcome this problem?”

Entries should be 1,000-1,500 words, in an op-ed, rather than academic, style. Only one entry per person, but collaborations are welcome. Amazon gift cards will go to the winners.

Entry information will be available in the Connections Lounge during the day’s activities.

At 11 a.m. a faculty panel will discuss what they believe are major ethical issues facing the world. Lisa Shepard, Distinguished Visiting Professor in journalism, will be the monitor. The invited panelists are:

• Vikas Anand, professor and department chair of the Department of Management, at the Sam M. Walton College of Business
• Uche Ewelukwa, professor, School of Law
• Jonathan Marion, associate professor, Department of Anthropology, J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences
• Zola Knowles Moon, clinical associate professor, Human Environmental Sciences, Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
• Jared Philips, instructor, Fulbright Interdisciplinary Support, Fulbright College

At 1 p.m. a panel of representatives from the Athletics Department will discuss how the athletics programs follow ethical principles to stay in compliance with their professional organizations, including the NCAA, and, more importantly, how they develop athletes into leaders. The panelists are:

• Jon Fagg, moderator, senior associate athletic director for development and administration
• Derita Ratcliffe, senior associate athletic director for student-athlete experience and administration
• Charles Small, assistant athletic director for academic services 

At 2 p.m. Carolyn Chitwood from the Career Development Center will bring a display of 24 professional codes of ethics to life by talking about ways the U of A develops students into ethical professionals in their fields.
