Abigail Walker

Abigail Walker

Abigail Walker has been selected as the Student Leader of the Month for September. Originally from Fayetteville, Abigail came to the University of Arkansas to major in English. She has served as an Associated Student Government executive member, Kappa Kappa Gamma Academic Committee member, Distinguished Lecture Committee marketing chair, Fellowship Fayetteville RSO vice president, Honors College student ambassador, Fellowship Fayetteville Cell Group leader. Abigail has stated that a large reason she became so involved was because she "always believed it was important to invest in what I am passionate about and serve others".

When asked what he thought a leader's most important qualities were, Abigail said, "The most important quality of a leader is compassion. So much of leadership relies on making sure people are able to do their best work, which they cannot do without support and encouragement. Compassion allows a leader to see past their own objective into the hearts of the people they work with, bringing forth the best qualities of those people in relation to the objective." Abigail also identified Blaire Waddell as someone who has impacted her leadership skills.

Abigail's advice to other leaders is to learn to listen. She stated, "Listen to others and affirm their ideas. Everyone brings a different perspective and story to the table, and might present ideas that you wouldn't think of on your own." Her favorite quote is from Gandalf, "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."

The Student Leader of the Month award, sponsored by New Student & Family Programs, recognizes University of Arkansas undergraduate students for their excellence in leadership through campus involvement, leadership activities, or through volunteer and community service.  Find out more information about the award.
