In an effort to expand their department's outreach and impact in the local community, several faculty members and students from the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice within the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences recently spent time getting their hands dirty to make a difference.

Participants worked side-by-side painting at Salvation Army, laying sod at Habitat for Humanity, spreading compost at Tri-Cycle Farms, and cleaning and organizing the day center at 7Hills.

"The Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice had a very rewarding experience engaging with the local community, working on several projects for local non-profit organizations," said Kevin Fitzpatrick, university professor and director of the Community and Family Institute.

Fitzpatrick worked with local service providers to identify several projects for the department to work on, and more than 30 faculty and students pitched in. The Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice along with student organizations including Alpha Kappa Delta, Alpha Phi Sigma and Lambda Alpha Epsilon participated in what will now be a yearly community engagement activity for the department.

If your department is interested in developing outreach and community engagement opportunities for their faculty and graduate students, please contact Fitzpatrick at kfitzpa@uark.edu.

About the Department: The Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice offers three degree programs and two honor societies; affiliation with renowned research units including the Community and Family Institute and the Terrorism Research Center; and research emphases in community, crime and law, social inequality, social psychology, culture, organizations and social networks.
