Arkansas Archeological Survey to Host Celebrate Archeology

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Fayetteville Research Station of the Arkansas Archeological Survey will Celebrate Archeology!, an event to honor Arkansas Archeology Month.
The third-annual event, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, at the Arkansas Archeological Survey building, located at 2475 N. Hatch Ave. in Fayetteville. The building is just north of the Pauline Whitaker Animal Science Center at the Arkansas Agricultural Research and Extension Center. Free pizza will be provided.
Archeologists from the survey will demonstrate the atlatl and how it is used to throw a spear and other tools and weapon replicas, including a blowgun. There will be information and a display on basketry and weaving. Flintknapping (stone tool making) will be demonstrated and those attending can try their hand.
The public is invited to bring both prehistoric and historic artifacts to have a survey archeologist identify them (no appraisals). Ground-penetrating technology will be on display with information on how the technology works, as will dendrochronology (tree-ring dating).
Prehistoric musical instruments will be demonstrated and there will be other displays and information on Arkansas archeology.
