Route, Safety Precautions Outlined for Homecoming Parade on Dickson
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The 2015 University of Arkansas Homecoming Parade presented by the Student Alumni Association of the Arkansas Alumni Association will take place at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30.
The parade route begins at the intersection of Dickson Street and Highland Avenue, proceeds directly along Dickson, and culminates at the traditional Homecoming Pep Rally site at the Chi Omega Greek Theatre.
Leadership across campus, including the Arkansas Alumni Association, Student Affairs, Athletics, the University of Arkansas Police Department and members of the Fayetteville Police Department, are working together to reinforce and increase safety for the Homecoming Parade. This year’s parade will involve over one thousand participants including the Homecoming court and past queens, the University of Arkansas Marching Band, 15 student-led floats, and many students who walk in the parade in support of their student organizations.
The city of Fayetteville will be leading off the parade and blocking the intersection of Dickson Street and West Avenue. The UAPD will be covering the intersections of Dickson Street and Arkansas, Harmon, Buchanan and McIlroy Avenues. In addition, the Student Alumni Association has increased its support with over 75 volunteers on hand at 36 stations throughout the parade route. This is an increase from last year of 25 volunteers and 19 blockades or security stations.
“The safety of our students and the University of Arkansas family are a top priority for all of us as we head into this Homecoming weekend,” said Brandy Cox, executive director of the Arkansas Alumni Association. “We are all deeply saddened by last week’s tragedy at Oklahoma State University. Although we do not anticipate any similar occurrence happening at the University of Arkansas, we are reminded of the importance of remaining ever vigilant in our security measures and ensuring the safest possible environment for all who will be participating in our Homecoming activities.”
The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has also organized an opportunity for U of A students, faculty, staff, alumni and Razorback fans to show their support for the Oklahoma State family in the wake of last weekend’s tragedy.
On Friday and Saturday, they will have an opportunity to add their signatures to a customized 11x28-foot banner of support that will be sent to Oklahoma State. The banner depicting the neighboring states of Arkansas and Oklahoma also features the logo of each school’s mascot, a Razorback and a Cowboy, as well as the words “Standing #StillwaterStrong.”
