FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Kathryn Sloan, associate professor of history and former chair of the department, has been named associate dean of fine arts and humanities for the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. Her appointment will begin Aug. 1, 2015.

"I am honored and excited to have been appointed to such an esteemed position," Sloan said. "This is a unique opportunity to work closely with innovative and dedicated faculty members, staff and students across Fulbright College, and I look forward to promoting Senator Fulbright's legacy of peace through education."

Sloan came to the University of Arkansas as an assistant professor in 2004 and was promoted to associate professor in 2009. She is a Latin Americanist who specializes in the social and gender history of modern Mexico. She serves as a core faculty member for the Latin American and Latino Studies Program and the Gender Studies Program.

"We're happy to have Dr. Sloan join the Fulbright College administrative team," Shields said. "The associate dean of fine arts and humanities is crucial to the work we do every day. Her experience with interdisciplinary studies programs will be invaluable to our students and faculty."

The associate dean of fine arts and humanities serves as the administrative liaison between the Dean's Office and departments, programs and research centers in the fine arts and humanities and promotes research by encouraging faculty to apply for external grants and fellowships and by facilitating grant-writing workshops. She is also a primary contact for interdisciplinary programs in the college and works closely with the Fulbright College Advising Center. Other duties include overseeing faculty awards and fellowships, administering the Cambridge University visiting fellowship program and supervising the academic integrity process.

Sloan is the author of Runaway Daughters: Seduction, Elopement, and Honor in Nineteenth-Century Mexico (New Mexico, 2008) and Women's Roles in Latin America and the Caribbean (Greenwood, 2011). She is putting the finishing touches on a book-length social and cultural study of suicide in modern Mexico that is under advance contract with the University of California Press.

Sloan has been repeatedly recognized for her teaching, research and service while at the university. She received the Fulbright College Outstanding Advisor Award, John E. King Award for Outstanding Service, and the Mitch and Barbara Singleton Research Travel Award. She was a 2006 Connor Faculty Fellow.

She received a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Kansas State University. She earned a Masters of Business Administration, Master of Arts in Latin American studies and a doctorate in Latin American history from the University of Kansas.
