U of A Recognized for Value and Sustainability
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Princeton Review and the online service bestvalueschools.com both agree that the University of Arkansas is committed to “green” in two ways: by saving students money and working to save the environment.
The Princeton Review includes the U of A in its 2015 edition of Colleges That Pay You Back, citing the university’s affordability, its “wonderful” Honors College and strong programs in business, engineering, agriculture and study abroad.
The U of A is also included in the Review’s current Guide to 353 Green Colleges, based on a survey of more than 2000 schools, looking for the institutions that are “up to the task of training the next generation of leaders, who will be responsible for putting green ideas into practice.”
In the third survey the online service bestvalueschools.com is more specific in its environmental ratings: it puts the University of Arkansas as #28 in its 30 Best Value Green Colleges. The rank is based on affordability first, but beyond that schools are ranked on their sustainability tracking, assessment, and rating system ranking; number of “green” majors; number of research centers and institutes with a sustainable focus; “green” student volunteer opportunities; outdoor and nature-focused recreational activities; and the quality and quantity of environmental policies on campus.
The survey praises the U of A particularly for student involvement in recovering unused food from university dining halls and outside vendors, green awareness in the campus Greek community, projects related to the environmental sciences, recycling and composting programs and the university’s commitment to becoming a “zero-waste” institution by 2021.
