ROGERS, Ark. – A local attorney will guide business leaders in developing lawful dress code policies during a workshop from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, at the University of Arkansas Global Campus facility in Rogers.

Having a dress code in place can prevent employees from wearing flip-flops and tank tops to work, but the code should not discriminate against members of protected groups, according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The way employers handle – or don’t handle – workplace dress code issues can lead to claims of harassment, discrimination and even National Labor Relations Act violations.

Cindy Kolb, an attorney with Cross, Gunter, Witherspoon and Galchus P.C., will instruct business leaders to implement a dress code policy that follows federal guidelines.

The workshop will be offered in a face-to-face class at the Rogers facility in Suite 402, 3300 Market St., and online via Blackboard Collaborate. The cost is $49 per person, but U of A faculty, staff, students and alumni members pay a discounted rate of $44.10 each.

Participants will be able to:

  • Avoid dress code policy and enforcement that inadvertently discriminate against protected groups;
  • Increase familiarity and understanding of the EEOC’s recent publication on Religious Garb and Grooming in the Workplace;
  • Identify potential legal implications of dress code policy enforcement, such as harassment and discrimination claims and even National Labor Relations Act violations.

This program has been approved for 2 general recertification credit hours through the Human Resource Certification Institute and the Society for Human Resource Management.
