This Week in the Visual and Performing Arts: Nov. 21-Dec. 5

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences will host many events this week, including recitals, concerts, art exhibitions, a guest lecture, a theatre performance and a film screening. Students, faculty, staff and guests are encouraged to attend these events in the visual and performing arts.

The Department of Music will host a retrospective of Alfred Schnittke’s chamber, small ensemble and film score works at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, in the Great Hall at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville.

Also on Friday, the Department of Theatre Studio Series presents Taking Pictures by Horton Foote at 7:30 p.m. in Kimple Hall room 404. The undergraduate project may also be seen Saturday, Nov. 22, and Sunday, Nov. 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the same location.

Theresa Delaplain and Lia Uribe, will give a recital at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2925 N. Old Missouri Rd. in Fayetteville. The performance will kick off the Double Reed Rally.

Later that afternoon, a Double Reed Rally Gala Concert will be held at 3 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center’s Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also on Saturday in Stella Boyle Smith, Elliot Green will give a bass trombone recital at 6:30 p.m.

Andrew Stephens will give a bassoon recital at 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall

The University of Arkansas Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony will give a concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, in the Fayetteville High School Performing Arts Center, 994 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

Stephanie Burnett will perform a voice recital at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall

The art exhibit Three’s A Crowd, will close Wednesday, Nov. 26, at sUgaR, the student art gallery. The gallery is located at 1 E. Center St. on the Fayetteville Square, with hours from 3:30- 6:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.

Cody Walter will give a tuba recital at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also in Stella Boyle Smith, Christopher Barnett will perform an oboe recital at 4:30 p.m. and Tyler Simmons will give a percussion recital at 7:30 p.m.

The University of Arkansas Tuba and Euphonium Quartets will perform at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, in Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Later that evening in Stella Boyle Smith, Jackie Anderson will perform an oboe recital at 8 p.m.

Yudai Hironaka will give a euphonium recital at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 2, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall. Hironaka will be accompanied by Tomoko Kashiwagi and Yoko Fukuda.

Also on Tuesday in Stella Boyle Smith, Timothy Clifford will perform a percussion recital at 8 p.m.

Nadi Cinema presents Here Comes the Rain (dir. Bahij Hojeij, Lebanon 2010) at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, in the Hembree Auditorium, room 107E in the Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences building.

Also on Wednesday, Praise the Lord! A celebration of the life of Eddie Jones, a concert honoring the late associate professor of music, will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville.

The University of Arkansas New Music Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Guest scholar Frank Russo, associate professor of psychology at Ryerson University, will give a lecture on the cognitive science of music at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, in room 115 of the George and Joyce Billingsley Music Building.

Also on Friday, the Beginning Band Ensemble will perform at 6 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Later that evening in Stella Boyle Smith, Rachel Phillippe and Melissa Phillips will give a violin recital at 8 p.m.

Luscious: The Body Adorned, an exhibition curated by Cynthia Norse Thompson, will close Friday, Dec. 5, in the Fine Arts Center Gallery. Gallery hours are from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 2 p.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.

The Arkansas Experience in the First World War, an exhibition of artifacts including uniforms, helmets, weapons and photos will remain on display through December in the Bogle Exhibit Hall on the 5th floor of Old Main.
