This Week in the Visual and Performing Arts: Oct. 31- Nov. 7

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences will host many events this week, including multiple recitals, film screenings, plays, art exhibitions and workshops. Students, faculty, staff and guests are encouraged to attend these events in the visual and performing arts.

An exhibit of artwork from printmaking and ceramics classes that has been on display in the hallway cases in the Fine Arts Center will close Saturday, Nov. 1.

Andrew Fischer will give saxophone recital Sunday, Nov. 2, at 3:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center’s Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also on Sunday in Stella Boyle Smith, the University of Arkansas Latin American Ensemble will perform at 6:30 p.m.

Luscious: The Body Adorned, an art exhibit addressing notions of beauty and adornment, will open Monday, Nov. 3, in the Fine Arts Center Gallery. It will remain on display until Friday, Dec. 5. Gallery hours are from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 2-5 p.m. Sunday.

Also on Monday, the Razorback Marching Band will honor John George, Voice of the Razorback Marching Band, at the Disney-themed 19th Razorback Band Spectacular at 7 p.m. in Barnhill Arena.

Students in Ronda Mains and Catalina Ortega’s flute studio will give a recital at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also on Tuesday, students in Theresa Delaplain’s oboe studio will perform at 7:30 p.m. at Good Shepard Lutheran Church in Fayetteville.

Later that evening, Michael Burner will give a trombone recital at 8 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Nadi Cinema presents Four Lions (dir. Chris Morris, England 2010) at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, in the Hembree Auditorium, room 107E in the Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences building.

At the same time, the University of Arkansas Opera Theatre will perform in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Comedian and actress Aizzah Fatima will present “On the Road with Dirty Paki Lingerie,” a workshop for students, at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, in the ISS Classroom in Holcombe Hall. Lunch will begin and noon, seating is limited and reservations are required.

Also on Thursday, artist, filmmaker and musician Todd Chandler will give a guest lecture at 5:30 p.m. in Kimpel Hall room 102.

At the same time, sUgAR, the student art gallery, will hold an opening reception for its newest exhibition, Three’s a Crowd. The exhibit will be on display at 1 E. Center St. on the Fayetteville Square, from 3:30-6:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday until Wednesday, Nov. 26.

 Later that evening, Aizzah Fatima will perform her one-woman show, Dirty Paki Lingerie, at 7 p.m. in Giffels Auditorium in Old Main.

Guest artist Neil Rutman will give a piano recital at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

An ethics workshop, moderated by Deborah Potter, Visiting Distinguished Professor of Ethics in Journalism, will be held from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in the Donald W. Reynolds auditorium. Registration is required.

Also on Friday, A Debt Repaid: The Legacy of Dr. Fredrick Lee Liebolt, a documentary about the distinguished alumnus, will be screened at 6 p.m. in the Janelle Y. Hembree Alumni House.

Later that evening, the University of Arkansas Opera Theatre will perform at 7 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

University Theatre presents Kin, a play by Bathesheba Doran. The opening performance is at 8 p.m. Friday and will continue until Nov. 16. Performances will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

The Arkansas Experience in the First World War, an exhibition of artifacts including uniforms, helmets, weapons and photos will remain on display through December in the Bogle Exhibit Hall on the 5th floor of Old Main.
