FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences is pleased to announce the competition for the 2015-16 class of Cambridge Fellows. Since 1988, Fulbright College has selected 40 faculty members to spend a year at Cambridge University, researching amidst the vast scholarly holdings of Cambridge’s libraries and enjoying the comradery of an international cohort of specialists in their fields. Former Fulbright College Cambridge Fellows hail from 14 out of the 19 departments in Fulbright College (see below for a full list of fellows).
The Fellowship Program finds its origins in 1986, the brain-child of Jack Guilds, then-dean of Fulbright College, and Michael O’Brien, a professor of history who now is professor of American intellectual history at Jesus College, Cambridge. In 1988, Fulbright College sent its first two Cambridge Fellows, who spent a year at this beautiful and inspiring place: professors Louise Kraemer of the Department of Biological Sciences and George Blyholder of the Department of Chemistry. Kraemer found herself in the delightful company of the fellows and students of Lucy Cavendish College. Blyholder benefited from the international group of scholars and graduate students at Wolfson College.
Professor Benjamin Grob-Fitzgibbon, member of the Department of History and Cambridge Visiting Fellow 2013-14, had this to say about his experience: Wolfson College and the University of Cambridge are very special places. The Visiting Fellowship afforded me an unparalleled opportunity to research at libraries and archival collections second-to-none in the world, to write without the pressure of competing demands on my time, and above all else the space and freedom to think. It was a privilege to represent Fulbright College at Wolfson last year, and I would highly recommend it to any of my colleagues."
Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge, has a singular history among British and European universities. Lucy Cavendish College is the latest and perhaps the last women's college to be founded in the United Kingdom. The college was established in 1965, initially as an experimental female academy for women graduates. The development of the college grew out of the vision and determination of three women who formed a Dining Group in Cambridge in 1951. Find out more about Lucy Cavendish College.
Wolfson College was founded by the University of Cambridge in 1965 as University College, changing its name to Wolfson College in 1973 following generous funding from the Wolfson Foundation. The college is now a mature institution and plays a full part in the life of the University of Cambridge, both intellectually and also culturally. Wolfson College is the most cosmopolitan academic unit at Cambridge University. Find out more about Wolfson College.
The Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences would like to recognize all the scholars who have held the prestigious Cambridge Fellowship, from 1988 to the present and wish the current recipients of this enviable academic prize, Professors Elizabeth Markham (Department of History) and Charles Muntz (Department of History), a productive and stimulating year at the University of Cambridge.
