Norvell Named Arkansas Bar Foundation Professor of Law
Arkansas Bar Foundation Professor of Law Phillip Norvell
FAYETTEVILLE --Phillip Norvell has been named the 2014-15 Arkansas Bar Foundation Professor of Law. A longtime member of the faculty at the University of Arkansas School of Law, Norvell teaches in the areas of property and natural resources as well as antitrust law.
School of Law faculty members are selected for this honor based on outstanding teaching and excellence in scholarship in Arkansas law. During their one year appointments, Arkansas Bar Foundation Professors are expected to contribute to the legal profession in Arkansas by building strong relationships between the faculty and state’s bench and bar.
“Professor Norvell has been instrumental in building the School of Law’s outstanding curriculum in oil and gas law,” said Stacy Leeds, dean of the law school. “He has attracted many students to the practice and maintains strong ties with natural resources attorneys throughout the region.”
Norvell graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a bachelor of arts and earned his juris doctor in 1973 from the University of Oklahoma School of Law, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif and the Order of the Barristers. He practiced law as an antitrust trial attorney with the Bureau of Competition of the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, D.C., prior to joining the School of Law faculty.
His scholarship is centered around oil and gas law. He has lectured before numerous national and state mineral law institutes on oil, gas, and water law. His most recent writings have focused on mineral conveyancing and facilitating the development of oil and gas resources. On October 16 and 17, he will host the Arkansas Law Review Oil and Gas Symposium in El Dorado, Ark.
Norvell has served on the Natural Resources Section of the American Bar Association and the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation in an editorial capacity. He was a member of the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission from 1987 to 1996. He has also served as a member of the Board of Editors of the Oil & Gas Reporter since 1981.
