This Week in the Visual and Performing Arts: March 14-28

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences will feature many recitals and concerts, a film screening, an author reading and two art exhibitions in the coming weeks. Students, faculty, staff and guests are encouraged to attend these on-campus and off-campus events in the visual and performing arts. Due to spring break, scheduled March 24-28, this story covers two weeks of events. This column will not run on March 21 or 28.

Schola Cantorum will perform a concert tour farewell at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 14, at the First United Methodist Church in Rogers.

Friday is also the last day to see works by visiting artist Carson Fox and examples of printmaking by students, which have been on exhibit in the Fine Arts Center hallway.

Nicholas Clark Rhodes will give a percussion recital at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 15, in the Fine Arts Center’s Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also on Saturday, Schola Cantorum Alumni Reunion will perform at 7:30 p.m. at the University Baptist Church in Fayetteville

Guest artist James Decker will give a trombone concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 16, in Hillside Auditorium room 202.

Also on Sunday, the University Symphony Orchestra will perform Arias and Auroras at 7:30 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall. The program will be conducted by professor of music Robert Mueller and will include music by Mozart, Giordano, Mascagni and Sibelius.

Guest artist Luis Tabuenca will give a percussion concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 17, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall. Tabuenca is a native of Spain and an active member in the international improvising music scene, focusing on contemporary and experimental percussion.

Boston Mountain Brassworks will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

The University of Arkansas Bands Program will host the 2014 Southwestern Division Conference of the College Band Directors National Association beginning on Wednesday, March 19 and running through Sunday, March 22. The conference will include performances by nine concert ensembles from eight states and many research presentations by association members. Also on Wednesday, Nadi Cinema will host a screening of Lion of the Desert (Mustapha Akkad, Libya 1981) at 7 p.m. in room 104 of Mullins Library.

At the same time, guest artist and novelist Mary Kay Zuravleff will read from her new work at Nightbird Books in Fayetteville.

Emily Thompson will give an oboe recital at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Guest artist David Gerstein (cello) and faculty member Er-Gene Kahng (violin) will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 20, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall. Gerstein is principal cellist for the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra.

The University of Arkansas Wind Ensemble will give a concert titled Collaborations at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 21, at the Walton Arts Center. This is the keynote concert of the Southwestern Division Conference of the College Band Directors National Association. The public is invited to attend, and admission is $1 for University of Arkansas students with valid student identification and $5 for the general public.

The Suzuki Music School will give a student recital at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 22, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Faith and the Devil, an installation by Lesley Dill continues until Friday, April 4, in the Fine Arts Center Gallery. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. This exhibit will be closed Friday, March 28, for the university’s spring break.

Divide Light continues until Sunday, April 13, in the Joy Pratt Markham Gallery at the Walton Arts Center. Gallery hours are 9 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, and one hour prior to most Walton Arts Center performances.
