Space Still Available in American Red Cross Lifeguard and CPR/First Aid/AED Certifications
The department of University Recreation is offering two American Red Cross First Aid, Adult CPR and AED certification opportunities during the spring 2014 semester. Course dates are either 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18, or 1:30-5:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 13.
This program is designed to help people lead safer and healthier lives, as well as enhance preparedness in homes, schools, and workplaces. In addition to choking rescue and CPR techniques, students will learn how to treat cuts, bruises, bone and muscle injuries, shock, bleeding and other first aid emergencies. Students will also learn how to operate an automated external defibrillator (AED). This course meets OSHA guidelines for the workplace. Upon successful completion, students receive American Red Cross certificates for Adult CPR, Adult First Aid, and AED (valid for two years).
Cost for either of the above sessions is $65 for U of A students and $85 for all other participants.
American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification will also be offered during three different courses in March, April and May. This course teaches participants surveillance skills to help recognize and prevent injuries, rescue skills on land and water, First Aid/CPR for Lifeguards, and professional responsibilities. Lifeguard Certification participants must be 15 years of age, and must pass a pre-course swim test. Course dates are March 24-27, April 17-20, or May 8-11.
Cost is $225 for U of A students, and $275 for non-U of A students.
These classes are open to members of the public. Participants do not need to be affiliated with the University of Arkansas to register and attend. Participants may register in person at the University Recreation membership office in HPER 225. The UREC membership office is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
