This Week in the Visual and Performing Arts: Feb. 28-March 7

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Students, faculty and guests of the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences will participate in concerts, lectures, art exhibitions, film screenings and a rock musical this week. Everyone is encouraged to attend these on-campus and off-campus events in the visual and performing arts.

Brice Smith will give a flute recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, in the Fine Arts Center’s Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also on Friday, the drama department’s production of Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik’s musical Spring Awakening continues at 8 p.m. in the University Theatre, with additional shows at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 1, and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 2. Tickets are available in the Fine Arts Center box office and are $3 for University of Arkansas students with valid student identification, $14 for seniors and university faculty and staff, $16 for adults and $7 for children and non-UA students. Tickets may also be purchased online at http://drama.uark.edu. This production is intended for mature audiences only.

Gray Zone, an exhibit by guest artist Marat Paransky, will close Saturday, March 1, at the Bottle Rocket Gallery in Fayetteville.

Also on Saturday, Heather Werschky will give a violin recital at 6 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Guest artists Jie Lu and Ning Lu will give a piano recital at 6 p.m. Sunday, March 2, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Faith and the Devil, an installation by Lesley Dill, will open Monday, March 3, in the Fine Arts Center Gallery. It will close Friday, April 4. The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Guest artist Lesley Dill will give a lecture at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, in the Fine Arts Center’s Stella Boyle Concert Hall. There will be a reception prior to the lecture at 5 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Gallery.

Also on Tuesday, the German Club will present Leroy (Armin Völckers, Germany 2007) at 6:30 p.m. in Old Main’s Giffels Auditorium.

At 7 p.m., Nadi Cinema will present Ring of Fire (Bahij Hojeij, Lebanon 2004) in room 104 of Mullins Library.

Later that evening, the University Symphony Orchestra conducted by Robert Mueller, professor of music composition and theory, will perform at 7:30 p.m. at the Fayetteville High School Performing Arts Auditorium.

A reception honoring guest artist Lesley Dill will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at the Walton Arts Center in conjunction with her exhibition Divide Light: The Operatic Performance Costumes of Lesley Dill Exhibition. A screening of the opera Divide Light will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Starr Theater.

Also on Thursday, guest artist Jason Yi will give a lecture at 5:30 p.m. in room 213 of the Fine Arts Center.

At 6:30 p.m., the German Club will present Auf der anderen Seite / The Edge of Heaven (Fatih Akin, Germany 2007) in Old Main’s Giffels Auditorium.

Later that evening, Staci Hatmaker will give a conducting recital at 7:30 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Janelle Hollister will give a voice recital at 6 p.m. Friday, March 7, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also on Friday in Stella Boyle Smith, Judd Burns will give a voice recital at 8 p.m.

Divide Light continues until Sunday, April 13, in the Joy Pratt Markham Gallery at the Walton Arts Center. Gallery hours are 9 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, and one hour prior to most Walton Arts Center performances.

A display of work by visiting artist Carson Fox and examples of printmaking by students continues in the Fine Arts Center hallway exhibition cases. The exhibit will close on Friday, March 14.
