The office of diversity and inclusion in the Sam M. Walton College of Business participated in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 22. Staff members and students hosted a mini-service project in the Arkansas Union Connections Lounge where students were invited to help sort and package items donated during the Hat, Glove, & Scarf Drive. The office, in collaboration with the Volunteer Action Center, sponsored the drive throughout December and January to collect new and gently used winter items to be donated to shelters in the community.

Rachel Dukes, senior Accounting major and president of the National Association of Black Accountants, helped manage the Hat, Glove, & Scarf Drive mini-service project, along with representatives from ALPFA student organization.

“I really enjoyed volunteering for the MLK service day,” said Dukes. “We had a good number of students stop by our table, and I think the Hat, Glove, & Scarf Drive was a great way to give back to our community.”

During the mini-service project, students packaged 92 sets of hats, gloves, and scarves. The items will be donated to Seven Hills Homeless Shelter, Fayetteville Public Schools Outback, and the Peace At Home Family Shelter. Barbara Lofton, director of the office of diversity and inclusion, said that the event was a success and involved the help of many individuals and departments throughout campus.

“The office of diversity and inclusion and the Volunteer Action Center would like to express our appreciation for everyone who donated items and helped make this event possible,” said Lofton. “We are so fortunate to be part of such a giving community, and this project was a wonderful opportunity to work together and help those in our community who are in need.”
