'She Stoops to Conquer' Creates a Romp at the University Theatre

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – A whirling world of outrageous dresses, British wit and mistaken identity is taking over the University Theatre in November. The University of Arkansas department of drama will open their production of She Stoops to Conquer on Friday, Nov. 15, and it will run until Nov. 24. Performances are at 8 p.m. Nov. 15, 16 and 20-23, and at 2 p.m. Nov. 17 and 24.
Michael Landman, associate professor of drama and head of the master of fine arts directing program, (A Streetcar Named Desire, 2013) directs a cast of graduate and undergraduate drama students in a farce, filled with bawdy pranks and misunderstandings.
This 1773 comedy of errors begins with the impending arrival of Charles Marlow, who has been sent to woo the lovely Kate Hardcastle. When Kate learns that Charles is a "singular character," paralyzed with fear among women of his own ranking she decides to disguise herself as a common maid in order to put him at ease and conquer his heart.
Meanwhile, Kate's best friend Constance Neville and Constance's secret admirer George Hastings begin a devious plan of their own, while skirting around Kate's impossible father. Tony Lumpkin, Kate's drunken brother, throws a wrench into everyone's schemes, but perhaps he is the most successful schemer of them all.
Other credits include scenic design by assistant professor Shawn Irish, costume design by professor Pat Martin, lighting design by senior drama student Justin Spaethe and technical direction by assistant professor Patrick Stone.
Tickets are $16 for adults, $14 for faculty, staff and seniors, and $7 for children under 18. University of Arkansas students may attend the show free of charge on Wednesday and Thursday or for $3 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Students must show their university ID for the free or discounted tickets.
Tickets are available online at http://drama.uark.edu or at the box office in the Fine Arts Center. Box office hours are from noon until 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and two hours prior to each show. For reservations by phone, call the University Theatre Ticket Office at 479-575-4752.
Parking is available in the Stadium Drive Parking Facility and is free after 5 p.m. Entrance to the parking facility is on Stadium Drive, and the facility's elevator will take patrons to street level directly across from the Fine Arts Center.
The University Theatre is located in the Fine Arts Center and is part of the department of drama in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Science.
