University of Arkansas Press Publishes King Me, Plays Written by U of A Drama Professor
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas Press has published King Me: Three One-Act Plays Inspired by the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ($17.50, paper), by Clinnesha D. Sibley, assistant professor of drama in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences.
A trio of short dramas set in the South and spanning 1968 to the present, King Me adds to the many civil rights titles published by the U of A Press. The three plays feature characters and themes that examine our ongoing understanding of King. Bound by Blood, #communicate, and Paradox in the Parish dramatize three of King’s popular quotes, offering creative methods for teaching history and social studies and setting the stage for inspiring discussions for contemporary theatergoers.
Readers and audiences will also learn about more recent civil rights issues such as the Jena Six Case in Jena, La., while appreciating, or appreciating anew, how King impacted the lives of his own and future generations.
Cheryl Collins, artistic director for the Metropolitan Ebony Theatre, called King Me a “fresh perspective from a fearless new playwright."Kim Estes, actor for stage, film and television, called it a “a powerful and wonderful work.”
Clinnesha D. Sibley is the author of It’s in My Blood: Thicker than Water and the winner of the Holland New Voices Award. She is also a faculty member in the university's African and African American studies program.
