Nursing Students Put on Back-to-Summer Fair

Eight University of Arkansas seniors in the Eleanor Mann School of Nursing offered information to ensure a safe, healthy and fun summer for students who attend an after-school program at the Donald W. Reynolds Boys and Girls Club of Fayetteville.
The students were required to put together a project such as the health fair for their clinical rotation that focuses on community-based health programs, said Rochelle Franklin, their clinical instructor. The students worked with the Division of Agriculture to provide information on sun safety, water safety, Internet safety and nutritional snacks and meals.
More than 100 children moved through the stations set up by the nursing students at the May 1 fair at the club on Rupple Road in Fayetteville. The nursing students encouraged them to make good decisions to keep themselves well during the summer, whether swimming, playing in their neighborhoods, eating or spending time on the Internet. At one station, plastic bags were filled with sugar of varying amounts to show the children how much was in their favorite drinks. Another station focused on physical activity such as biking, skateboarding and other sports.
The students also arranged for Inta Juice to make smoothies for the children.
