Andrea Love Named 2013 Udall Scholar for Commitment to Environment

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Andrea Love, a junior Honors College Fellow from Fayetteville, has been named a recipient of the Morris K. Udall Scholarship. She joins 49 other students nationally as the 2013 class of Udall Scholars. Love is an environmental, soil and water science major in the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences and a communication major in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. 

The Morris K. and Stewart L. Udall Scholarship Foundation awards 50 merit-based scholarships of up to $5,000 and 50 honorable mentions to college sophomores and juniors who have demonstrated outstanding potential and a commitment to pursuing careers related to the environment. The foundation also awards scholarships to Native American college sophomores and juniors who have demonstrated outstanding potential and a commitment to careers related to tribal public policy or health care.

Three additional University of Arkansas students received honorable mentions. Douglas Wolf is an Honors College junior from Fayetteville, majoring in environmental, soil and water science. Kathryn Dunn, an Honors College sophomore from Muskogee, Okla., is a landscape architecture major. Both students are committed to careers connected to environmental issues. Emily Alberty, an Honors College sophomore from Westville, Okla., is majoring in political science and communication. She is a member of the Cherokee Nation and is planning to pursue a career in tribal public policy.

“I am delighted that Andrea Love has been selected as a Udall Scholar. She is a perfect fit for this environmental award,” said U of A Chancellor G. David Gearhart. “Her work with the Student Sustainability Council has been significant, and this is just one of her many contributions to sustainability and to the campus. The University of Arkansas is committed to having a positive impact on the environment and on public policy issues. Nothing makes that clearer than students like Andrea Love, Doug Wolf, Katie Dunn and Emily Alberty.”

 “I am thrilled and honored to have been selected as a Udall Scholar,” said Love. “It feels wonderful to be supported in pursuing a career that I am passionate about. I am excited about connecting with other scholars and to further my work in community goods production and access.”

Love studied abroad at Oatridge College in the United Kingdom and participated in a service-learning project in Belize. She received a state-sponsored Student Undergraduate Research Grant this spring and has been active in Students for Gender Equality, the Crop Soil and Environment Science Undergraduate Club, the Green Village Foundation, the university’s Office of Sustainability, and the Walker Park Community Garden.

“The Udall Foundation’s selection of Andrea Love, an office for sustainability intern, is a reflection of the commitment of our students to innovations in sustainability,” said Marty Matlock, executive director for the office of sustainability. “Andrea’s work with our office has been exemplary; we are proud of her commitment and vision for improving social well-being while reducing impacts on the Earth.”

The 2013 class of Udall Scholars was selected from 488 candidates nominated by 230 colleges and universities. 

“I am really excited for these outstanding students,” said Robert K. Bacon, chair of the department of crop, soil and environmental science. “But not really surprised — it is well-deserved. Our students can compete with any in the country.”
