FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas Concert Band and Wind Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, in Walton Arts Center’s Baum Walker Concert Hall. The concert is presented by the department of music in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences as part of the Joy Pratt Markham Series.

The concert will feature a performance by guest artist Joseph Alessi on trombone. He will play Harvest, a concerto for trombone and wind ensemble, with the Wind Ensemble.

“Alessi is a world class performer,” said Christopher Knighten, director of bands. “To have him here to work with us will be a real treat, for both the students and the audience as well.”

Alessi is the principal trombonist with the New York Philharmonic and teaches at The Julliard School. He has also served as second trombonist of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Montreal Symphony.

“The Wind Ensemble is composed of the premier players in the school, who rehearse almost five hours a week,” said Knighten. “The ensemble permits flexible instrumentation, allowing students to perform in small groups or with the entire band. By doing this, we can allow each student to have a broader experience as a musician.”

The bands will be conducted by Knighten, Senior Wind Band Conductor W. Dale Warren, Associate Director of Bands Ben Chamberlain, Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Jann Knighten, and graduate conducting students Michael Moon and Alex Badour, all with the department of music.

The program is as follows:

UA Concert Band conducted by Chamberlain, Jann Knighten and Moon

Gavorkna Fanfare by Jack Stamp

Color by Bob Margolis

Shenandoah by Frank Ticheli

Chorale and Shaker Dance by John Zdechlik
