Twelve Associate Professors and Mentors to Participate in New Program

Earlier this year, the University of Arkansas announced a new initiative for faculty development to be sponsored by the provost's office. Advancement for Associate Professors was designed for faculty members who have held the rank of associate professor long enough to be eligible to be promoted at the University of Arkansas and are interested in re-emphasizing their research agendas.

In the program's inaugural year, 12 associate professors have been selected to participate in Advancement for Associate Professors. Each of these professors will be assisted by a faculty mentor. The 2013 participants and their mentors are:

  • Laurie Apple, Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
    Mentor: Donald Johnson, professor, department of agricultural and extension education 
  • Kathleen Barta, College of Education and Health Professions
    Mentor: Pegge Bell, professor and director, Eleanor Mann School of Nursing
  • Charlene Carter, College of Education and Health Professions
    Mentor: Mounir Farah, professor of social studies education, department of curriculum and instruction
  • Patrick Conge, J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences
    Mentor: Margaret Reid, professor and chair, department of political science
  • Findlay Edwards, College of Engineering
    Mentor: Marty Matlock, professor, department of biological and agricultural engineering
  • Gregory Herman, Fay Jones School of Architecture
    Mentor: Robert McMath, professor of history and dean of Honors College
  • Mack Ivey, J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences
    Mentor: Steve Beaupre, professor and chair, department of biological sciences
  • Felicia Lincoln, College of Education and Health Professions
    Mentor: Barbara Gartin, University Professor of special education, department of curriculum and instruction
  • Cathy Lirgg, College of Education and Health Professions
    Mentor: Dean Gorman, professor and assistant department head, department of health, human performance and recreation
  • Cheryl Murphy, College of Education and Health Professions
    Mentor: Michael Miller, professor of higher education and associate dean, office of academic affairs, College of Education and Health Professions
  • David Paul, J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences
    Mentor: Julie Stenken, professor and 21st Century Chair in Proteomics, department of chemistry and biochemistry
  • Patsy Watkins, J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences
    Mentor: Hoyt Purvis, professor, department of journalism

The University of Arkansas is excited to welcome these professors to the program as they take the next step in their academic careers. There will be a reception to honor the participants and their mentors, department heads and deans.
