University Recreation is celebrating the centennial of collegiate recreation by honoring National Recreational Sports and Fitness Day on Friday, Feb. 22. Multiple events will take place at the Donna Axum Fitness Center in the HPER Building and at the UREC Fitness Center in the Arkansas Union.

Students and UREC members can stop by either fitness center throughout the day and log a 5K on any cardio machine to earn a prize. For participants wondering what their caloric expenditure is every day, UREC will be conducting free resting metabolism rate tests (normally $25) in the Donna Axum Fitness Center from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

For participants who are looking for a unique cardio and strength workout, UREC personal trainers are hosting a ViPR workout from 1 to 1:45 p.m. in the UREC Fitness Center. A video of a ViPR workout can be seen here: http://tinyurl.com/ViPRvideo.

University Recreation will also be using this day to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the opening of the UREC Fitness Center in the Union. Healthy snacks and giveaways will be available from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and a mini Strong Hog Competition will take place during this time as well. The events for the Strong Hog will be longest plank hold on a BOSU, longest wall sit with a weighted ball and longest weighted hold with arms extended.

“This mini Strong Hog Competition is being done to help advertise for the full event, which will be held March 13 in the HPER Building, as well as to give participants a chance to see just how strong they really are,” said Samantha Fehr, graduate assistant for University Recreation.

All events throughout the day are free and do not require registration.

Multiple universities across the nation will be participating in NIRSA’s (National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association) National Recreational Sports and Fitness Day. For more information, please contact Sam Fehr at sfehr@uark.edu or 575-7382.
