This Week in the Visual and Performing Arts: Feb. 1-8

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences will hold several events in the coming week including concerts, arts exhibitions and guest lectures. Students, faculty, staff and guests are encouraged to attend these performances in the visual and performing arts.

There will be a Tribute to Black American Composers concert at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1, in the Fine Arts Center’s Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall. This event will be followed by a panel discussion at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, held at the same location.

Tim Hale, senior vice president of design management at FOSSIL Inc., will give a lecture on his experiences designing watch faces, selecting color trends for packaging and assisting in every part of store design, including displays, furniture cases, store fixtures and counter-tops. His talk will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5, in room 213 of the Fine Arts Center.

Also on Feb. 5, Richard Rulli will perform a Trumpet and Friends recital. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Leslie King-Hammond, the founding director of the Center of Race and Culture at Maryland Institute College of Art and the school’s graduate dean emeritus, will give a guest lecture at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Ongoing events include the Employing Voice, Embracing Agency: Celebrating Contemporary African American Artists and Amos Kennedy Prints! art exhibitions.

Employing Voice, Embracing Agency, curated by Cynthia Nourse Thompson, is on display in the Fine Arts Center Gallery until Feb. 28 as part of an extensive series of events honoring African American History Month in February. The exhibition includes artwork of various media and features many pieces from the collection of former Razorback basketball player Darrell Walker. Featured artists include Wardell Milan, Radcliffe Bailey and Xaviera Simmons, among others. The Fine Arts Center Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Amos Kennedy Prints! is on view in the exhibition cases of the Fine Arts Center through Feb. 28. Kennedy, a renowned letterpress printer based in Alabama, is known for his bold work and sharp political and racial commentary. The exhibition will be accompanied by a lecture and letterpress-printing workshop by Kennedy in late February.
