Architecture Students Show One-Night Exhibition at sUgAR Pop-up Gallery

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The work of Fay Jones School of Architecture students Paul Mosley and Scott McDonald will be displayed this week at a one-night exhibition by sUgAR, the University of Arkansas Student Gallery. The exhibition will be at LaLaLand Art Gallery in Fayetteville on Thursday, Jan. 31, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Mosley’s exhibit will consist of 32 digital drawings, the majority of which are focused on the transformation and analysis of French architect Etienne Louis Boullee's Project for a Palace of Justice in the 1780s. The exhibit will also include digital drawings from a fall 2012 studio with Vincent James and Jennifer Yoos, visiting professors from award-winning Minneapolis-based architecture firm VJAA.

"I am an architectural relativist,” said Mosley. “For me, this means being persistently curious. It means asking critical and intelligent questions. It means keeping an open mind about what architecture is and can do, especially in a discipline that constantly changes. I believe theoretical work in architecture is and always will be invaluable, even when it seems useless."

McDonald’s work comes from an independent study completed in the spring of 2012. The 29-piece collection utilizes various media in an effort to answer the personal questions that McDonald says he is continuously asking: ‘When does a drawing become an object?’ ‘Is it possible to build a drawing?’ and ‘How can a drawing illustrate space and time?’

“The deadly cycle of developing then rediscovering is a game that I have grown to appreciate,” said McDonald. “The structure of the work is formed from traditional drawing types; the constructed perspective, section, and elevation, as well as traditional means of canvas construction. The merging of these methods allows mutations to form. The result of this work was never expected, it was discovered. What the viewers will see is my process of discovery and my discoveries.”

William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences and the departments of architecture, interior design and landscape architecture in the Fay Jones School of Architecture.
