This Week in the Visual and Performing Arts: Jan. 25-Feb. 1

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences will hold many events during the first weeks of the spring semester, including a concert and several art exhibitions. Students, faculty, staff and friends are encouraged to attend these on-campus and off-campus performances in the visual and performing arts.

Employing Voice, Embracing Agency: Celebrating Contemporary African American Artists, an exhibition curated by Cynthia Nourse Thompson, will be on display in the Fine Arts Gallery from Jan. 14 until Feb. 28 as part of an extensive series of events honoring African American History Month in February. The exhibition includes artwork of various media and features many pieces from the collection of former Razorback basketball player Darrell Walker. Featured artists include Wardell Milan, Radcliffe Bailey and Xaviera Simmons, among others. The Fine Arts Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Amos Kennedy Prints! will be on view in the exhibition cases of the Fine Arts Center from Jan. 14 until Feb. 28. Kennedy, a renowned letterpress printer based in Alabama, is known for his bold work and sharp political and racial commentary. The exhibition will also be accompanied by a lecture and letterpress-printing workshop by Kennedy in late February.

Guest artist Wesley Ferreira will perform a clarinet concert at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 30, in the Fine Arts Center’s Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall. Ferreira is an assistant professor of clarinet at Colorado State University and has performed worldwide as a soloist, orchestral and chamber musician as well as a clinician and conductor.

sUgAR Projects will present a one-night event exhibiting the work of Fay Jones School of Architecture students Paul Mosley and Scott McDonald on Thursday, Jan. 31. The exhibition and reception will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at LaLaLand Art Gallery, located at 641 W. Martin Luther King Blvd. in Fayetteville.
