Professionals to Learn About Medications Prescribed to Children, Adolescents with Mental Health Issues

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Professionals can tap into a University of Arkansas social work course in March to learn about the types of psychotropic medications prescribed to children and adolescents to treat mental health issues.

The class “Exploring Common Medications and Diagnoses for Children and Adolescents” provides working professionals the opportunity to learn either face-to-face or via the Internet about mental health diagnoses, medications and their side effects. Michael Collie, a clinical assistant professor in the School of Social Work in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, will teach the course, which will benefit social workers, educators, health care workers, counselors and students.

Collie will teach the class from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at the Global Campus, 2 E. Center St., Fayetteville, Room 403. The class will be available simultaneously via the Internet. Participants are required to complete reading assignments and contribute to an online discussion prior to the class.

The cost is $129, and participants can register online at http://globalcampus.uark.edu/register. Detailed class information is available at http://globalcampus.uark.edu/pd.

Participants who satisfactorily complete the session will receive a certificate of completion from the Global Campus and the School of Social Work. Participants can use the certificates to satisfy requirements for continuing education hours in social work. An application for Arkansas Department of Education Professional Development hours for kindergarten through 12th-grade educators was submitted, and pre-approval is pending.

Collie has taught at the University of Arkansas for six years, and he and his wife own a private psychotherapy practice in Fayetteville, Collie Clinical Counseling. He has 30 years of experience working with and diagnosing children and adolescents who take psychotropic medications. He has provided training, clinical consultation and supervision for Vista Health and other providers for the past 12 years.
