Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band Feature Guest Musicians in Upcoming Concert

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band will perform in Walton Arts Center’s Baum Walker Concert Hall on Monday, Nov. 19. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and is presented by the department of music in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences as part of the Joy Pratt Markham Series.

The concert will feature guest performances by Theresa Delaplain, instructor of music, and visiting artist Cheryl Wefler. The oboe duo will perform the Concerto in F for two Oboes and Band, Op.9/3 by Tomaso Albinoni and Delaplain will also perform Oblivion for Solo Oboe and Band by Astor Piazzolla.

The Symphonic Band will be conducted by Christopher Knighten, associate professor of music and director of university bands, with one selection conducted by graduate conductor Michael Moon. The Wind Symphony will be conducted by W. Dale Warren, professor of music and senior wind band conductor, with one selection conducted by Benjamin Chamberlain, assistant professor of music and associate director of bands.

“These concerts serve as a performance experience for our students as well as an opportunity for the campus and community to learn more about the concert band program at the university,” said Warren. “Our students have prepared extremely hard for this performance, and we hope people from all over the region will join us for this concert and enjoy their exemplary contributions. Also, we are looking forward to hosting and showcasing our very special guest artists.”

Wefler currently plays with the Eugene Symphony, the Oregon Mozart Players and Eugene Opera Orchestras. She has played in orchestras in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and North Carolina.

Symphonic Band, Knighten, conductor

• Second Suite in F for Military Band by Gustav Holst
• ‘Blessed Are They’ from A German Requiem by Johannes Brahms, Moon, graduate conductor

Wind Symphony, Warren, conductor

• The Wind and the Lion by Jerry Goldsmith, including the Symphonic Band
• Concerto in F for two Oboes and Band, Op.9/3 by Tomaso Albinoni, featuring Urycki-Wefler and Delaplain on oboe
• Down A Country Lane by Aaron Copland, Chamberlain, conductor
• Oblivion for Solo Oboe and Band by Astor Piazzolla, featuring Delaplain on oboe
• ‘Symphonic Suite’ from On The Waterfront by Leonard Bernstein

General admission is $10, $5 for senior citizens and $1 for students. Walton Arts Center is located on Dickson St. in downtown Fayetteville. Paid parking is available in lots near Walton Arts Center.
