New Honors Magazine in Print and on Web

Can the tiny fruit fly help us fight fat? How about using plastic barrels, PVC pipe and sand to provide clean water for an African orphanage – no electricity needed?

These and other real-world research, service and creative efforts by Honors College students are featured in A+, the new Honors College magazine. The 36-page magazine also includes:

• A feature article on up-and-coming opera singer Sarah Mesko, who earned degrees in both voice and flute, summa cum laude, from the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences in 2008. Just five years into her career, Mesko has sung with the Washington National Opera and Santa Fe Opera, made her European debut and shared the stage with Plácido Domingo. Her success hinged on an important choice made right here on campus.
• An interview with Gary Brewer and Eric Silinsh, architects with Robert A.M. Stern Architects of New York City, on the design of the new addition to historic Ozark Hall that will be home to the Honors College beginning next fall.
• A graphic showing the impact of a $25,000 course development grant (think eight student research grants and a National Endowment for the Humanities faculty grant, for starters) plus an overview of eight new interdisciplinary courses that have received Honors College seed funding.
• Honors College Fellow Lucky McMahon’s vivid account of her travels and research in Mexico, which focuses on Mexico City’s first Christian church as a site of memory and myth. 
• A pop quiz to test your wits, devised by honors professors. It looks easy …
