Razorback Athletics Goes Pink for the Cure
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas athletics department has teamed up with the Susan G. Komen-Ozark Affiliate and sponsors Academy Sports + Outdoors, Mercy and United Healthcare to create a year-long initiative to raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer.
Special “Pink” events begin in October in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness month.
“We are proud to participate in this year-long campaign to aid the fight against breast cancer,” said Jeff Long, vice chancellor and director of athletics. “By utilizing designated Razorback events, we will be able to raise awareness and provide valuable information about the importance of early detection and treatment. This is a great opportunity to wear your pink, support a great cause and cheer on some of our outstanding Razorback women’s teams.”
Each Razorback women’s athletic team will host a “Pink” event during the 2012-13 season beginning with soccer Oct. 14, when the team hosts Auburn at 1 p.m. The Razorback swimming and diving team takes part Oct. 19 with a home meet with Georgia at 2 p.m., followed by the Arkansas volleyball team’s Pink game with Alabama Oct. 26 in Barnhill Arena.
The Pink events continue in February with the Razorback gymnastics team when they host Florida Feb. 1. The Razorback women’s basketball team hosts its Pink game Feb. 17 against Missouri. Softball and women’s golf are also scheduled to have a Pink event.
The women’s cross country and track and field teams will show their support by wearing the official pink T-shirt at the 24th annual Chile Pepper Festival Saturday, Oct. 13. The team will also distribute information to fans about breast cancer prevention and treatment. The Chile Pepper Festival begins at 10:30 a.m. at Agri Park.
Fans are encouraged to purchase the official pink T-shirt in support of the initiative. The cost is $15 and includes free admission to the soccer, volleyball, women’s basketball, gymnastics and softball “pink” events. All other events are free to attend. The T-shirts are available to purchase at Hog Heaven located in Bud Walton Arena and at each sporting venue. A portion of every T-shirt sold will benefit the Susan G. Komen-Ozark Affiliate.
