Ambassadors Hold Workday at Fulbright Gravesite

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Last spring, seven student ambassadors and three staff members with the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences advising center participated in a workday in Evergreen Cemetery to attend to the grave site of Sen. J. William Fulbright.
To show their gratitude and respect for the senator, the group raked leaves, pulled weeds and picked up trash around the cemetery.
“I really enjoyed cleaning up Senator Fulbright's grave site,” said student ambassador Kaylan Hagan. “It is important to be respectful to those who have come before us, and by cleaning this site we were able to more fully appreciate what the senator and his family have done for the university.”
The work left the group feeling that a great deal more could be done. The student ambassadors plan to go back to Fulbright’s grave site for another workday, and they encourage more students to visit.
“We’d love to be able to help maintain Senator Fulbright’s grave site,” said Trevor Francis, director of the Fulbright College advising center. “In addition to maintenance, the ambassadors thought that adding mulch to the space inside the metal lawn edging would enhance the look of the area. They’d also like to add a historical marker about Senator Fulbright in the cemetery.”
Evergreen Cemetery is one of the largest historical cemeteries in the region. It is the resting place for many historic figures, which has earned it a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. It is located off of University Avenue, behind the Nanoscale Material Science and Engineering Building.
