New Faculty Member Brings Eastern, Western Knowledge to World Languages, Literatures and Cultures
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The department of world languages, literatures and cultures in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences has announced that Hongjian Wang will be joining the faculty this fall as an assistant professor of Chinese. Wang comes to Fayetteville from the University of California-Riverside, where she recently defended her dissertation on 20th century Chinese literature.
“Dr. Wang brings a great deal to the department and Fulbright College,” said Joan Turner, professor of Spanish and chair of the department. “Her impressive language skills and diverse cultural knowledge will allow us to expand the courses we can offer our students.”
A native Mandarin speaker, Wang is also fluent in Cantonese and English with reading skills in French. She has applied these skills in her research on Chinese literature and film, theater studies and British and French literature and art.
“My colleagues in the department of world languages, literatures and cultures are doing exciting research and employing innovative teaching methods,” said Wang. “I look forward to being part of the work they’re doing.”
Wang has presented her literary and film analyses at several conferences in the United States and China. She also has a forthcoming publication on the representations of masculinity in modern China.
Wang earned a bachelor of arts in British and American literature from Nanjing University (2006). She earned a master of arts (2009) and doctorate (2012) in comparative literature from the University of California-Riverside.
