Delta Classic Tournament Raises Scholarship Funds for CSES Students

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The 13th annual Delta Classic Scholarship Golf Tournament held Aug. 3 at the Helena Country Club raised more than $23,000 to fund scholarships for Crop, Soil, and Environmental Science students at the University of Arkansas.

Robert Bacon, head of the department of crop, soil and environmental sciences in Bumpers College, said the tournament has raised over $300,000 for scholarships in 13 years.

Delta Classic scholarships of $2,000 for the 2012-2013 school year were awarded to Christian Bloodworth of Marion, Michael Crosby III of Little Rock, Michael Fogleman of Marion, Haley Higgins of Lowell, Taylor Ibbotson of Lonoke, Matthew Moore of Marion, Quentin Nichols of Gideon, Mo., Eliott Pruett of Summers and Yim Teldell of Conway.

One hundred and five scholarships have been awarded, and an endowment is being built for the James L. Barrentine Endowed Scholarship, Bacon said. A former department head, Barrentine started the tournament in 1999.

Matt Cordell of Lonoke was this year’s tournament director. An agronomist with Crop Production Services, he is a member of CSES Alumni and Friends.

Corporate sponsors for the tournament were Allen Canning Company, Arkansas Farm Bureau, DuPont Pioneer, Isle of Capri, Helena Chemical Company and Monsanto. Hole sponsors for the tournament were Ag Hertitage Farm Credit Services, BASF, Bayer CropScience –HBK Seed, Cache River Valley Seed, LLC, Cheminova, Inc., Crop Production Services, CSES Weed Science, Dow AgroSciences, Fuller Seed & Supply, Hickory Hills Pharmacy, Mid-South Ag Equipment, Producers Rice Mill, Inc., Riceland Foods Foundation, Syngenta, USA Rice Federation, and U of A Entomology.

CSES Alumni and Friends involved in this year’s tournament included Jim Barrentine, Grant Carter, Adam Compton, Matt Cordell, Josh Cunningham, Gloria Fry, Otis Howe, Jr., Otis Howe, III, Darrin Malone, Johnny Roach, Scott Rushing, Dale Smith, Ron Talbert, and Jerry Williams. 

Winning team sponsors and golfers were:

  • First Flight – Helena Chemical Company – Team 2 – Adam Compton of North Little Rock, and Grant Carter, Alex Maynard and Trip Morgan, all of Stuttgart.
  • Second Flight – Hickory Hills Pharmacy – Forrest Galloway of Little Rock, and Eddie Calhoun, Rick Campbell and Reed St. Columbia, all of Helena-West Helena.
  • Third Flight – Monsanto/DeKalb – Paul Pirani, Sam Stucky, Dennis Pirani and Jamey Boney of Marion.
