Susan Mayes, an instructor in kinesiology at the University of Arkansas, was recently elected to the National Dance Association Board of Directors.

Mayes was elected to the position by the voting members of the National Dance Association, a division of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. She will serve as the vice president-elect of science and somatics on the 13 member national board.

The National Dance Association supports a membership network of 2,000 individual dance educators, institutional and affiliate members and serves as a resource for federal and state agencies and arts and education organizations.

Mayes has previously served at the state and regional level in the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, primarily in the area of dance.

In the position, which is a three-year commitment, Mayes will promote the mission and goals of the National Dance Association. In addition to teaching at the university, she serves as coordinator of undergraduate studies for the department of health, human performance and recreation in the College of Education and Health Professions. She teaches ballroom dancing as an elective each spring, and the class quickly fills with students of all majors.
