On Monday, April 9, the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences will celebrate the homecoming of the Fulbright Statue.

The statue of the former university president and U.S. senator has graced the west entrance to Old Main since 2002, when it was dedicated in a ceremony that included President Bill Clinton. The statue was removed in 2011 for protection during nearby construction projects and will be returned to its place of honor on April 9.

“We’re so excited to have the statue back that we wanted to have a party,” said Robin Roberts, dean of the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. “The fact that April 9th is the 107th anniversary of Senator Fulbright’s birth gives us even more reason to celebrate.”

Fulbright College invites the university community to join them for a homecoming, birthday party, and a brief program. The celebration will take place at 3:30 p.m. on the west side of Old Main. In case of rain, the event will be held in Old Main’s Giffels Auditorium. Speakers will include Dean Roberts, Associate Dean Charles Adams, Fulbright Scholar and drama student Missy Maramara, and Chancellor G. David Gearhart.

Gearhart and Adams are also Fulbright Scholars. Gearhart’s Fulbright Fellowship took him to Oxford University’s Merton College in Oxford, England. Adams served as a Fulbright Professor of American Studies at the University of Bonn in the Federal Republic of Germany.
