University Libraries Present Four Films of the Apocalypse
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas Libraries are hosting a series of feature films on the theme “Four Films of the Apocalypse” in celebration of National Library Week. The films will be screened in Mullins Library Room 104 each Tuesday evening from April 3 to April 24, all beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
The schedule for the film series is:
April 3 – Children of Men (United States, 2006). The world’s youngest citizen has just died at 18, and humankind is facing the likelihood of its own extinction. Set in and around a dystopian London fractious with violence and warring nationalistic sects, Children of Men follows the unexpected discovery of a lone pregnant woman and the desperate journey to deliver her to safety and restore faith for a future in those presently on Earth. Written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón; also written by Timothy J. Sexton, David Arata, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby; based on the novel The Children of Men by P.D. James; starring Clive Owen, Julianne Moore and Michael Caine.
April 10 – Forbidden Planet (United States, 1956). Commander Adams and his starship crew travel to Altair iv to investigate the disappearance of a colony of settlers. They learn that Dr. Morbius and his beautiful daughter are the only two survivors from the original expedition. When Adams and his crew try to leave, a mysterious force threatens to destroy them. Directed by Fred M. Wilcox; written by Cyril Hume, Irving Block and Allen Adler; based on the play The Tempest by William Shakespeare; starring Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis and Leslie Nielsen.
April 17 – WALL-E (United States, 2008). In this Pixar animated film, Wall-E is the last robot left on an Earth polluted and abandoned by humankind. When a reconnaissance robot named EVE is sent to Earth to find signs of life, Wall-E tries to impress her and inadvertently embarks on a space journey that will ultimately decide the fate of mankind. Written and directed by Andrew Stanton; also written by Pete Docter and Jim Reardon; voices of Ben Burtt, Elissa Knight and Jeff Garlin.
April 24 – Delicatessen (France, 1991). A blend of dark humor and satire set in a post-apocalyptic world where lack of food drives the residents of an apartment house into hiring “handymen,” killing them, and supplying the bodies to their landlord, a butcher, for processing. Complications arise when the butcher’s daughter falls for the hapless latest arrival. Written and directed by Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet; also written by Gilles Adrien; starring Marie-Laure Dougnac and Dominique Pinon.
National Library Week is April 8-14 and the theme is “You belong @ your library.” First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is sponsored by the American Library Association and celebrated across the nation each April.
