Razorback Athletics to Celebrate Black History Month

Razorback Athletics will recognize the contributions of former African-American student-athletes, coaches and the 2012 University of Arkansas Silas Hunt Legacy Award honorees as part of a series celebrating Black History Month on ArkansasRazorbacks.com.

Throughout the month of February, individuals will be featured on the web site for their contributions to the University of Arkansas, the Razorback program and society. This marks the fourth year Razorback Athletics has celebrated Black History Month with a special features series on ArkansasRazorbacks.com.

“We are honored to recognize these special individuals who have meant so much to the University of Arkansas and have impacted the lives of others throughout our state and in their local communities,” said Jeff Long, vice chancellor and director of athletics. “From former student-athletes who are now making a difference as coaches to the trailblazers whose courage and determination helped integrate our university, they have all played an important part in our history. Their stories remind us of the tremendous contributions they have made to the legacy of the University of Arkansas.”

This year’s list includes former student-athletes who have gone on to collegiate coaching careers including former Razorbacks Sytia Messer (women’s basketball), Corliss Williamson (men’s basketball), Stanley Redwine (men’s track and field), Elisha Brewer (women’s track and field) and GiGi Miller (women’ track and field). 

Former Razorback head men’s basketball coach Nolan Richardson will also be featured as one of the Silas Hunt Award Legacy Award winners. Other Silas Hunt Award Legacy honorees being featured include Roderick McDavis, C.C. Mercer and Marjorie Wilkins Williams.
