Architect Peter Rich to Present Fay Jones School Lecture on Nov. 14

Architect Peter Rich will present a lecture titled “Learnt in Translation” at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14, at Hembree Auditorium in the Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences Building, Room 107E, on the University of Arkansas campus.

Rich is a principal architect at Peter Rich Architects in Johannesburg, South Africa, and a professor of architecture at Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg, South Africa. He is also the John G. Williams Distinguished Visiting Professor this year in the Fay Jones School of Architecture.

Rich is recognized as promoting a truly sustainable African architecture, enthusiastically engaging in long and complex political and consultative processes to ensure that the legacies of the projects last well beyond the building’s completion. He is one of the leading proponents of a contemporary African architecture, a fusion of modernism and tradition born from a deep understanding of African tribal vernacular.

He received the 2009 World Building of the Year Award for his design of the Mapungubwe Interpretive Center, in the Limpopo National Park in Mozambique. He was also awarded a gold medal by the South African Institute of Architects in 2010.

His lecture is part of the 2011-12 Fay Jones School lecture series. Admission is free, with limited seating.
