Global Campus Art Exhibit to Celebrate Native American Heritage Month

Prints of photographs documenting the lives of North American Indians in the early 20^th century will be on display along with related artifacts Wednesday, Nov. 2, through Thursday, Dec. 15, at the University of Arkansas Global Campus Center for Continuing Education Building, 2 E. Center St., on the downtown Fayetteville square.

The free exhibit honoring Native American Heritage Month will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, except for Thanksgiving weekend. For information, call 479-575-3604.

The special collections department of the University Libraries provided prints of photographs taken by Edward S. Curtis, who devoted his life to documenting the traditional customs of North American Indians during the early 1900s. The 19 prints on display were assembled by the University of Arkansas Honors Film Association in 2007.

The University Museum loaned about 20 American Indian artifacts that will be displayed in cases to complement the prints. These items include historic and prehistoric pieces from Arkansas, the Arctic, and the Northeast, Southwest and Great Plains regions of the United States.

The Global Campus exhibit is one of four events scheduled at the University of Arkansas in November in connection with Native American Heritage Month. Mullins Library will showcase a Contemporary American Indian Artists Exhibit throughout November. The 1930 silent film and docudrama, “The Silent Enemy,” will be screened at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, in Giffels Auditorium in Old Main. The Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra, a quintet of classically trained musicians from Boulder, Colo., will accompany the film. The Academic Lecture Series in Giffels Auditorium will feature Tim Thornes, a linguist, at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7; Brooke Benham, a fabric and jewelry artist, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8; and Manuela Well-Off-Man, an assistant curator for Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28.
