FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Jonathon Modica, holder of three degrees from the University of Arkansas and former Razorback basketball player, has been named the assistant director of development for university programs in the office of university development. In this role, Modica will be a part of a group of central development professionals responsible for raising private support for universitywide priorities such as Access Arkansas, a need-based scholarship program, diversity initiatives, Greek Life projects and other essential programs.

“My history with the university goes back to 2002, and this is my opportunity to continue to be a valuable asset to the institution,” he said. “The U of A played a critical role in shaping the individual I’ve become, and through this position, I can help the university grow in many ways.”

“Private financial support is extremely critical to the mission of the University of Arkansas,” continued Modica. “I really became interested in development work during my doctoral program as I learned more about the significance and impact of philanthropy.”

Modica will report to Charlotte Taylor, director of development for university programs, and will begin his work June 1.

“We are thrilled to welcome Jonathon to our staff,” said Bruce Pontious, associate vice chancellor for development. “His impressive academic background and full understanding of higher education are true assets to this position. Jonathon is perfectly poised to assume these vital fundraising duties for his alma mater. We are delighted he has chosen this career path and look forward to Jonathon joining our dedicated team of development professionals.”

A native of Smackover, Ark., Modica played four seasons as a guard with the Razorbacks. He was a two-time All-SEC player and ranks 12th on Arkansas' all-time scoring charts with 1,589 points. He earned a bachelor's degree in journalism in 2007 and a master's degree in journalism in 2008. During commencement exercises on May 14, he earned a doctorate in higher education from the College of Education and Health Professions. Modica has gained valuable experience during his years as a student by working in the Multicultural Center and with the department of intercollegiate athletics. He is also involved with the Arkansas Alumni Association as a Young Alumni Board member and is a Diversity Ambassador.

Earlier this spring, Modica was nationally recognized by the American Association of Blacks in Higher Education for his doctoral dissertation on the perceptions of career advancement of African American research university faculty. He was the second-place recipient of the association's Graduate Student Award, and he presented information from his research at the group's national conference in Atlanta.
