Housing and Information Fair for Students at the University of Arkansas to Be Held March 9

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas requires first-year students to live on campus, with few exceptions, but as students get older, traditionally, they tend to move off campus into apartments and rent houses in the area. Many of these students have never lived on their own and will be navigating the search for affordable, safe housing for the first time.

A housing information fair called “On Your Own: Get the Keys to Living Off-Campus” will be on Wednesday, March 9, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Connections Lounge of the Arkansas Union.

“Students need to consider carefully when choosing a new place to live. There are a lot of different factors to think about like the cost of utilities, understanding a lease agreement and knowing their rights as tenants,” said Susan Stiers, associate director of the office of off campus connections at the University of Arkansas.

It is important for students to remain engaged academically and socially with campus life once they move off campus. “We want to make sure students do not become isolated or miss out on enriching, educational and social experiences on campus, or students can start to feel lonely and disengaged from learning,” said Sylvia Scott, director of off campus connections.

More than 12 property management representatives will be present at the fair for questions, as will Legal Aid of Arkansas, Credit Counseling of Arkansas, university parking and transit and several other relevant organizations. Students will have opportunity to win more than $2,400 in cash and prizes at the fair. Students will learn about transportation and commuter tips, budgeting and credit, commuter meal plans, good neighbor relations, and many community and campus resources.

Students can also learn about properties at the university’s off-campus housing website. For more information about the fair or how to find off-campus housing please call 479-575-7351 or e-mail occ@uark.edu. The “On Your Own: Get the keys to living off-campus” is hosted by the office of off campus connections and the city of Fayetteville.
