University Parking and Transit Questions Answered – Part III

With the increased enrollment at the University of Arkansas, many students have questions about campus parking and Razorback Transit services. In an effort to inform the students, the Parking and Transit department is presenting many of the most frequently asked questions and their answers. This is the third of three articles for Arkansas Newswire. More information is available on the Transit and Parking website.

PARKING AND TRANSIT OPTIONS

Q: Where do I park and how do I get around campus?

Students may purchase Remote, Student, Resident Reserved and Garage parking permits. Each permit provides different parking privileges at different rates. Remote permits are the least expensive and provide parking only in a section of lot 56 at the south end of campus. Student permits authorize parking in any Student parking lot on a space-available basis. Resident Reserved permits are issued to students residing in campus residence halls and some Greek Houses and provide reserved parking in specific parking lots. Garage permits are available to students on a space-available basis and provide reserved parking in one of the three campus garages. Once parked on campus, the best way to travel around campus is on a Razorback Transit bus.

Q: What public transit service is available on campus?

Razorback Transit operates 16 buses on 10 routes from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and four buses on four routes from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Saturdays during the fall and spring semesters. Razorback Transit buses are fare free. Route maps are available in the lobbies of the Administrative Services Building and Administration Building, at the Arkansas Union Information Desk, on all Razorback Transit buses and on the web at http://transit.uark.edu.

Q: Are there rental cars available on campus?

Connect by Hertz has three rental vehicles on campus. These vehicles are located in lot 50, west of Brough Commons. Connect by Hertz members can reserve these vehicles on the web and rent them by the hour. The Toyota Prius and Mazda 6 rent for $8 an hour and the Ford Escape rents for $9 an hour. Univeristy students, faculty and staff may join Connect by Hertz by applying online. University Connect by Hertz members can rent Connect by Hertz vehicles anywhere in the country. These vehicles are a good option for students who only need a vehicle a few hours a week, students and employees who ride the bus or carpool to campus and need a vehicle during the day from time to time, and anyone who needs a vehicle when their normal vehicle is not available.

Q: What are the rules for bicycle parking on campus?

All bicycles parked on campus must display a univeristy bike parking permit. These permits are free and available from the Transit and Parking Department in the Administrative Services Building or the Parking Office in the Harmon Avenue Garage. They may also be ordered on the web at http://parking.uark.edu/531.php and mailed to your residence.

Bikes must be parked at a bike loop/rack or, if there is no bike loop/rack in the immediate area, they can be secured to handrails and non-painted light poles as long as they do not block pedestrian paths or create a safety hazard and must be secured with a commercially available bike lock to prevent theft. There are about 1,000 bicycle parking spaces at loops or racks on campus.
