Professor of Chemistry, Biochemistry Selected as ACS Fellow

Distinguished Professor Charles L. Wilkins was selected as a member of the 2010 class of Fellows of the American Chemical Society.

Wilkins is the only person in Arkansas to be included among 192 distinguished scientists who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in chemistry and made important contributions to the society. He is a member of the department of chemistry and biochemistry faculty in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences and was recognized on Aug. 23 during the American Chemical Society's national meeting in Boston.

Wilkins is well known in the fields of analytical chemistry, specifically mass spectrometry. "Whether it's making new materials, finding cures for disease or developing energy alternatives, these Fellows are scientific leaders, improving our lives through the transforming power of chemistry," said ACS President Joseph S. Francisco.

Similar to the inaugural class of fellows 2009, this year's class represents a wide range of disciplines and geographic locations, including 33 technical divisions and 79 local sections. The 2010 class also includes distinguished scientists and engineers from industry, academia and government.

Alumna Mary L. Good, M.S. '53, Ph.D. '55, was among the 163 Fellows named in 2009. The Fellows program began in 2009 to recognize and honor American Chemical Society members for their outstanding achievements in and contributions to science, the profession, and the society.
